Product Owner Job Description (DRAFT!)

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Agile Product Owner to join our team. The Agile Product Owner will be responsible for defining and prioritizing the product roadmap and working closely with the development team to deliver high-quality, valuable software.

The ideal candidate will

  • Be curious and continuously seek to understand the needs and interests of stakeholders, customers, users, and the business.
  • Proactive in gathering feedback and using it to inform the product roadmap and vision.
  • Value collaboration and  be able to effectively work with cross-functional teams
  • Consistently refine and order the product backlog.
  • Confident in being able to facilitate discussions and reach consensus among stakeholders.
  • Be value-driven and prioritize delivering value to customers and users over meeting specific deadlines or delivering specific features.
  • Have a strong understanding of how to balance short-term and long-term goals.
  • Be customer-focused and able to represent the needs and interests of customers in the product development process.
  • Be entrepreneurial and able to adapt to changing priorities and make data-driven decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Have excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Confidently be able to clearly articulate the product vision and roadmap to a variety of audiences.
  • Have experience working in a product development or software engineering environment


  • Define and maintain the product roadmap and vision
  • Collaborate with the development team to define and prioritize the product backlog
  • Understand and represent the needs and interests of all stakeholders, including customers, users, and the business
  • Make data-driven decisions using metrics and other relevant data
  • Communicate the product vision and roadmap to stakeholders and the development team
  • Attend and actively participate in Scrum ceremonies, including Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review, and Sprint Retrospective meetings
  • Continuously prioritize and re-evaluate the product backlog to ensure the development team is working on the highest value items
  • Act as the primary point of contact for the development team, providing clarity and direction as needed
  • Accept or reject completed work based on whether it meets the definition of done
  • Conduct market and competitive research to identify new opportunities and inform the product roadmap and vision.
  • Define and refine product metrics and KPIs to measure the success of the product and inform decision-making.
  • Work with the development team to estimate the complexity and effort of product backlog items.
  • Collaborate with the development team to identify and address technical debt and other technical challenges that may impact the product roadmap.
  • Work with the development team to identify and manage risks that may impact the product roadmap.
  • Collaborate with other Product Owners and/or a Product Management team to coordinate the development of multiple products or product lines.
  • Work with the development team to identify and prioritize customer feedback and feature requests.
  • Engage with customers and other stakeholders to gather feedback and build relationships.
  • Attend industry events and conferences to stay up-to-date on industry trends and gather insights.


  • At least 2 years of experience as an Agile Product Owner or similar role
  • Strong understanding of the principles and practices of agile development
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to prioritize and make data-driven decisions
  • Experience with agile tools


While not essential, we believe that certifications demonstrate a willingness to learn and demonstrate expertise.

In addition to formal certifications, it is also important for the Product Owner to have practical experience using agile methodologies in real-world situations. We value a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities that come with defining and prioritizing a product backlog. It is important to back certification with the experience to support the team.
