Hiring a great Scrum Master can be transformative for your projects, leading to better efficiency and the delivery of higher value for the business. The first step of the hiring process is the definition and creation of a Scrum Master job description. Whilst this may seem simplistic, it’s an important step to ensure that you attract the right talent.

As active project management consultants helping clients every day we get asked a lot about the ideal job description for a Scrum Master and as such, we’ve created an example description below (including as a downloadable PDF)

Example Scrum Master Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and qualified Scrum Master to join our agile development team. The Scrum Master will be responsible for facilitating the Scrum process and coaching the team to adhere to the principles of Scrum. They will work closely with the Product Owner to order the product backlog and ensure that the team is able to release high-quality, working software at the end of each Sprint. The ideal candidate will

  • Have a strong track record of successful Scrum implementations
  • Comes with a deep understanding of the Scrum framework and its principles.
  • Have experience working with cross-functional teams
  • Be able to effectively coach and mentor team members to ensure they can self manage and make decisions independently
  • Be a strong facilitator and communicator
  • Be able to clearly articulate ideas and facilitate discussions among team members.
  • Be proactive and solution-oriented
  • Identify and remove impediments to progress and help the team stay focused on delivery.
  • Be able to thrive in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment.
  • Have experience working with distributed or remote teams
  • Have a familiarity with agile tools such as JIRA, Trello, Asana or Scrumwise
  • Help move a traditional waterfall organisation towards an Agile approach through education and advocation

Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate the Scrum process, including Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review, and Sprint Retrospective meetings
  • Ensure the team is fully functional and supported, removing any impediments to progress
  • Coach the team on self-organisation and cross-functionality
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement within the team
  • Protect the team from external interruptions and distractions
  • Work with the Product Owner to order the product backlog and ensure the highest value items are prioritised
  • Support the team in making data-driven decisions using metrics and other relevant data
  • Educate stakeholders on the Scrum process and its benefits
  • Coach (not coerce!) the team in faster more effecient delivery approaches

Requirements:

  • Professional Scrum Master (PSM) or equivalent experience
  • Ideally have coaching certifications (ICAgile or equivalent)
  • At least 2 years of experience as a Scrum Master or Agile Coach
  • Strong understanding of the principles and practices of Scrum
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills
  • Ability to coach and mentor team members
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and fast-paced environment
  • Determined to help the team deliver and overcome friction and challenge
  • Optimistic, approachable and inventive

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience working with Scrum in a distributed or remote team
  • Experience with other agile methodologies such as Kanban, Lean, DSDM,  Disciplined Agile or SAFe
  • Experience with agile tools such as JIRA, Trello, Version One or Microsoft Azure
  • Experience working in a product development or software engineering environment
  • Experience working with waterfall methods
  • Solid facilitation approaches and techniques such as Bikablo, Liberating Structures etc.
  • Experience in coaching organisations towards agility

Coaching Skills

  • The Scrum Master is responsible for coaching and mentoring team members
  • They help the team become fully aligned with the Scrum framework, principles and values
  • This includes helping team members to understand their roles and responsibilities within the Scrum framework, and encouraging them to take ownership of their work.
  • The Scrum Master should have a deep understanding of agile values and principles, and be able to help team members embrace these values and apply them in their daily work.
  • They should also be able to help team members develop their skills and knowledge, and encourage continuous learning and improvement.
  • In addition to coaching team members, the Scrum Master may also need to coach other stakeholders, such as senior management or external partners, on the benefits of Scrum and how to support the team in the Scrum process.
  • Strong coaching skills are essential for the Scrum Master to be able to effectively support and guide the team towards success.

Certification

While not essential, we believe that certifications demonstrate a willingness to learn and demonstrate expertise

  • Obtaining the PSM certification demonstrates a basic understanding of the Scrum framework and a commitment to continuous learning and improvement.
  • Advanced certifications from the Scrum Alliance or Scrum.org are also valued ( PSM II, PSPO, PSPO-Advanced as examples)
  • We value other certifications such
    • The SAFe Scrum Master (SSM) offered by the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe).
    • ICAgile Certification
    • ScrumInc Certifications

In addition to formal certifications, it is also important for the Scrum Master to have practical experience using Scrum in real-world situations.

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary range: £60,000 – £90,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
  • Working hours / Location/Remote: 40 hours per week. Based in [City, UK]. Flexible hybrid model with remote work options.
  • Travel Requirements : Minimal, approximately 10%.
  • Paid Time Off (PTO) allowance: 25 days plus public holidays.
